Youth Soccer - FAQ

How much is the registration fee and what does it provide?

Registration for the Fall 2017 season at Wilson United Soccer League opens July 8, 2017 and ends on Aug 5, 2017 . The registration fee for all youth soccer registrations received during open registration is $85. Late Registration is closed when all of our teams are full.

Late Registration is complete. All registration for fall is closed. See you next season.

The youth soccer registration fee includes:

Soccer jersey ($10 discount if you use your Fall 2016 or Spring 2017 Jersey)
Insurance and registration through the Tennessee State Soccer Association
Participation medal at the end of the season
We are planning on playing 8 games per season, 6 guaranteed

Please note: The insurance through the Tennessee State Soccer Association is a secondary medical insurance that covers injuries incurred during a Wilson United Soccer League practice or game. This insurance pays out after your primary medical insurance has paid and after you have paid a deductible. This insurance is not intended to be a primary medical insurance policy.

Is there a discount for multiple children in the same family?

If you have 3 or more siblings registering for youth soccer each player's registration fee will be $70 instead of $85.

Are there any scholarships available for those who can’t afford the registration fees?

Yes, the Board of Directors provides for a limited number of scholarships each season for those who find themselves in financial difficulties. Applicants should contact the league to discuss their proof of financial hardship. The Board will verify the information and make a decision on the request. If approved, the applicant must agree to work at the fields (in areas such as concessions, field clean up, field maintenance, etc.) a specified number of hours.

What am I responsible for providing?

You will need to provide the following items for your player(s):
  • Soccer cleats (no toe cleat – such as what is found on baseball and football cleats)
  • Shin guards
  • Black soccer shorts
  • Black soccer socks
  • Soccer ball. Soccer ball size is based on the player’s age group:
    U5-U8 use a size 3 ball
    U9-U11 use a size 4 ball
U12 and up use a size 5 ball
You will also need to provide rides to practices and games. Please remember to bring your child something to drink at each practice and game. The concession stand will be open on Saturdays and will have drinks for sale. And last you will need to provide love, support and a positive attitude for your soccer star!

How do I know if my child is too young or too old to play? In what age division would my child play?

The age divisions are as follows:

Playing up in the next league level is allowed but will be very limited. All play-up requests will be reviewed by and must have the approval of the Registration Manager.

Playing down in a younger league is allowed only for medical reasons, requires a doctor's letter, and the approval of the Registration Manager.

WUSL will combine age groups to accommodate team sizes and coaching.  The fall season WUSL will play: U5, U6, U7, U9, U11, U13, U15.
U15 is coed and the rest of the ages are separate boys and girls teams.

Can I request a specific coach?

Yes, but we have the right to move you to a different team. Only coaches kids will be the exception.

Can I request that my child be placed on the same team as another player?

Yes, but we have the right to move you to a different team. Siblings will be placed on the same team.

When will I hear from a coach to know when my child has practice?

Practices will be established by the coach and notified by the coach

When do you play games? Where do you play games?

Games are played on Saturdays during the season. Depending on the number of players registered (and the number of teams we have), games are usually scheduled between 9:00am and 4:00pm.

Wilson United Soccer League games are played at the Lebanon Breakfast Rotary Soccer Complex.

When are practices held? What days? What time? Where?

Because Wilson United is an all-volunteer organization, each coach determines the practice day and time for his/her team. Wilson United does not assign practice days and times to teams.  However, we find that most teams practice one weeknight evening each week, most practices are about an hour in length (depending on the age group – older ages may practice an hour and a half).

Most practices start between 5:30pm and 6:30pm on weeknights. Wilson United asks coaches NOT to practice before 5:30pm on weeknights unless EVERY parent on the team agrees that they can meet for practice at an earlier time.

Practice locations are determined by the coach and will be scheduled throughout Wilson County.

Can I request that my child be placed on a team that practices on a specific day?

Unfortunately no since the practice schedule is maintained by the coach, we need to be flexible to our volunteers schedule.

How many players are on a team?

This information can be found in the rules for that season.

Are the teams co-ed, or are there all girls teams and all boys teams?

Due to the number of players in an age bracket Wilson United reserves the right to make any team co-ed when it needs to fill a team’s roster.

The registration form includes a section about volunteering. Do I *have to* volunteer?

Wilson United Soccer League would like parents to strongly consider volunteering to help out.

Because Wilson United Soccer League is an all-volunteer organization (there are no paid positions on the Board), volunteers are absolutely vital to the success and growth of Wilson United Soccer League. It also doesn’t matter how old you are: we have volunteers as young as seven years old as well as grandparents helping out on game days, collecting trash, replacing bathroom registration, etc.

How do I register?

Registration is closed

When does the season start and end?

The Fall Youth 2017 Season will be 8 games (6 guaranteed) starting Sept to Oct 28, 2017. Each team will typically have at least 1 doubleheader in the season.

What is the cancellation/refund policy?

All requests for refunds should be sent to president@wilsonunited.org. Please include your sign-up information in the email. Please refer to the dates and refund amounts below:

Fall 2017 season:
Refund requests received on or before Aug 5: Full refund
Refund requests received after Aug 5: No refund

No refunds will be granted to those who break the rules or the policies of Wilson United Soccer League.

If you register your child late, and Wilson United is unable to place your child on a team, Wilson United will issue you a refund for the fees paid.

Refunds are usually processed within a few weeks after the season begins.

What happens if it rains on game day?

We don’t let a little rain keep us from playing soccer. We will only cancel games in the event of a thunderstorm or if there is standing water on the fields. We also do not cancel games due to cold weather. If it’s cold outside, players are encouraged to wear sweatpants, a sweatshirt or jacket (MUST be worn under their soccer jersey), and even a hat and gloves.

The Field Commissioner Team will make the decision to cancel games due to weather. If the decision is made to cancel games, we will post a notice on the front page of our website, facebook and send out a text message to the league. So that we can provide as much notice as possible to all of our coaches, referees, players, and their families, every attempt is made to have the decision made and the notices out by 7:00 am on Saturday morning.

If the weather is questionable and you don’t see a notice on the web site, assume that all games will be played as scheduled.

Do you keep score?

Since Wilson United Soccer League is a recreational soccer league we do not keep scores or standings. We strive to teach the kids good sportsmanship and the game of soccer.

We know that realistically a child that can count and will probably know the score however we do not encourage them to announce it to the team, or the opposing team. If they ask you if they won you should ask them “Did you have fun?” If they say yes then that is all that is important.

How will I know my player’s game schedule?

Game schedules are usually finalized about a week before games begin and are distributed to the coaches. Your coach will then provide copies of the schedule to members of his/her team. In addition, the schedules may be viewed anytime online.

This is my first exposure to soccer – what are the rules?

Wilson United follows rules of FIFA and modifies them for our various age groups.

Is there any type of screening process for coaches?

Yes. For your child’s safety, the Tennessee State Soccer Association requires that all coaches complete a Volunteer Disclosure statement and background check.

Who do I talk to about getting started as a volunteer or coach? How could I volunteer my time?
